What is generic lipitor?

Generic Lipitor is a prescription drug in one of the newest classes of cholesterol-lowering medications, called statins. These drugs have been used widely for the last 5 years. For people with high cholesterol, Lipitor, in combination with a low-fat diet, can reduce your LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels
Atorlip is a cholesterol-lowering drug. Your doctor may prescribe it along with a special diet if your blood cholesterol level is high enough to put you in danger of heart disease, and you have been unable to lower your cholesterol by diet alone.
The drug works by helping to clear harmful low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol out of the blood and by limiting the body’s ability to form new LDL cholesterol.
Atorvastatin is a synthetic lipid-lowering agent. It is an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase enzyme. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, an early and rate limiting step in the synthesis of cholesterol.
Atorvastatin reduces total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and apo B in patients with homozygous and heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, non familial forms of hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemias. Atorvastatin also reduces VLDL-cholesterol and triglycerides and produces variable increases in HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1.

Each film-coated tablet contains Atorvastatin Calcium equivalent to Atorvastatin 20 mg

What is the dosage and administration?

Hypercholesterolemia (Heterozygous Familial and Nonfamilial) and Mixed Dyslipidemia (Fredrickson Types IIa and IIb): The recommended starting dose of atorvastatin is 10 mg daily. The dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once daily. Atorvastatin can be administered as a single dose at any time of the day with or without food. Therapy should be individualized according to goal of therapy and response. After initiation and/or upon titration of atorvastatin, lipid levels should be analysed within 2 to 4 weeks and dosage adjusted accordingly Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia: The dosage of atorvastatin in these patients is 10 to 80 mg daily.
