What is GENERIC PROPECIA?
Propecia (FINASTERIDE) is the first and only FDA approved pill proven to treat male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area in men. This medicine is an androgen hormone inhibitor used to treat male pattern hair loss in men only. Propecia is a pill taken by mouth that is a new and effective treatment for male pattern baldness. A net increase in scalp hair count and hair regrowth was seen in over 80% of men for whom it was prescribed. Numerous studies have been done looking at the efficacy of PROPECIA. Assessments were done by looking at photographic enlargements of sections of the scalp. Investigators have found that PROPECIA increases hair growth in over 80% of men. Overall improvements were seen as quickly as 3 months after starting the medicine. PROPECIA not only led to a decrease in hair loss but also significantly increased the rate of hair regrowth. These effects were maintained for over 2 years with continued PROPECIA therapy. It was concluded from these studies that as long as PROPECIA therapy is continued it will remain effective in facilitating hair regrowth.

What is Finpecia?
Finpecia , a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound is a specific inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts androgenic testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Administration of finasteride 1mg decreases scalp and serum DHT concentrations, increased amounts of which are thought to be responsible for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
Finpecia is made in India. Even though it contains the exact same chemical as Propecia (1mg of finasteride), its cost is significantly less than that of Propecia.
Cipla is allowed by Indian patent law to make drugs that are patented by other companies internationally as the law protects only the processes by which drugs are made, and not the drugs themselves.
Under current Indian law, which recognizes patents on ways to make drugs but not the drugs themselves.
This means Indian companies can make drugs under patent in the West, provided they use a process that is different from the original.
Manufacturers are able to produce and sell medicines here at a tiny fraction of the prices charged in the United States. In some cases, though, the generic makers have been blocked from selling their wares in other developing countries that have Western-style patent laws |
